Guess these gadget/computer shows will always be around, recession or not, Singaporeans will flock to these shows to spend on gadgets for the festive period. Sitex started today and will end on Sunday at Singapore Expo Hall 5, 6, Atrium 5 and Foyer 2 from 11am to 9pm.

If you are looking for good deals for Apple products, don’t expect to see much price cuts. Best you can get are bundles such as more RAMs, free bags or screen protectors. Also look out for iPhone accessories which many of those exhibitors will be selling.

If you have been there and seen some good deals, do let us know!

One free 1Password License giveaway

NOTE - this was in 2008. Giveaway is over.

As part of Agile’s Thanksgiving Holiday gift to their existing customer (like myself), they have given their customers a free license to 1Password to be given to anyone they choose.

We have a surprise to make this Thanksgiving extra special for everyone. Often, promotions are focused on new customers and don’t adequately recognise existing customers. 1Password is the most popular password manager on the Mac and iPhone/iPod touch because of you, so we thank you for this honour and offer you 1Password for free!

As an existing 1Password license holder, you already know that you can install 1Password on all your computers, thanks to our sane licensing model. You might be wondering, then, what good a free license is to you. Well, the way we see it, we get to express our gratitude and appreciation to all the 1Password customers that have helped us get where we are today, and you get to show your friends how much you care by saving them some money this holiday season and introducing them to some great new software!

So since I already have been using 1Password, I’d like to share some love to the 5 readers here at iHeartApple. To get it, simply drop a comment on why you think 1Password will be good to you and the best answers by Friday night 11.59pm Singapore Time will be given that free license. Only conditions are that you must be from Singapore and your comment won’t trigger ISD to come after you.

For those who prefer to pay and support a company like Agile, you can always make use of their Thanksgiving Special offer to get 1Password with a 15% discount! If you do it before Sunday, you are also eligible to get the free license. Buy 1 Get 1 free!

So why wait? Drop a comment on why you think 1Password will be good to you and the best answer, selected by a non-biased panel of me, myself and I, plus maybe some other helpful souls, will be given the free license.

uTorrent (Beta) for Mac released

Apparently on the Windows side of things, there is much love for µTorrent, a light-weight, full-featured bitTorrent client for much of your Bukit-Timah goodies. On the greener side of the world, us Mac users had to settle for the much bloated Java client Azureus for a period of time before we were introduced to Transmission.

I have been using Transmission since then as it takes up a smaller chunk of the processor and serves my TV needs. It can even run smoothly on a 6 year old PowerMac QuickSilver on 512MB ram.

Will µTorrent be as good as Transmission, or will you be bothered? Check it out yourself but do note that it is at beta right now. (Download link).

Let us know if you have tried it.

The Green Apple

When Greenpeace came out and put up a site denouncing Apple’s less than green effort in their manufacturing process last year, Steve Jobs was quick to announce a greener policy to help save the Earth.

Apple has been criticized by some environmental organizations for not being a leader in removing toxic chemicals from its new products, and for not aggressively or properly recycling its old products. Upon investigating Apple’s current practices and progress towards these goals, I was surprised to learn that in many cases Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors in these areas. Whatever other improvements we need to make, it is certainly clear that we have failed to communicate the things that we are doing well.

The new line of MacBooks and MacBook Pros are a good example of this earth-friendly policy. Some of the improvements in the new fabrication process includes the following:

  • Arsenic-free glass
  • Brominated flame retardant-free
  • Mercury-free
  • PVC-free
  • 41% smaller packaging
  • Highly recyclable aluminum and glass enclosures

Apple also recently just released a new ad about the new line MacBooks hailing them as the Greenest Family of Notebooks. Not sure who or what they compared with but with Apple, making big claims are not unusual.

So when you do buy the new Apple, besides doing yourself a great favour, you are also doing a part for the Mother Earth by buying a Greener Apple.
