NewsBits – New HandBrake, iPod Touch is faster and new chips for iPhone?

Looking for a replacement for VisualHub – look no further as HandBrake goes beyond ripping DVDs.

HandBrake is no longer limited to DVDs: it will now accept practically any type of video as a source. This massive enhancement was achieved by tapping into the power of libavcodec and libavformat from the FFmpeg project

The free media converting software is an open-source, GPL-licensed software that is available not just on the Mac, but also on Linux and Windows.

According to TouchArchade, the 2nd Generation iPod Touch runs faster than the iPhone.

The most clear difference is that fact that the iPod Touch’s processor was quietly boosted to 532MHz (up from 412MHz) with the 2nd generation model introduced in September. Meanwhile, the iPhone 3G, Original iPhone and 1st Generation iPod Touch continue to run at the original 412MHz.

With MacWorld coming soon in January, we might see an upgrade in the iPhone’s processor to at least match those of the iPod Touch.

Besides a speed boost, there is a possibility of a 32GB or 64GB model now that Intel and its memory partner Micron begin mass producing 34nm NAND flash memory that can support up to 64GB of space.

The smaller manufacturing process lets the two firms build individual chip layers with 32 gigabits (4GB) of data in a standard package and in large batches using regular 300mm wafers. The technology is small enough to allow eight cores per layer and would allow a two-layer stack to carry as much as 64GB without needing entirely separate chips.
