Happy 25th Birthday, Macintosh

25 January, 2009

macintosh-128k.jpgIt’s been 25 years since Apple launched the first Macintosh – the 128k (seen on the photo on the right). 25 years later, we have a whole family of Macs. From the Mac mini, iMac and Mac Pro for the desktop, MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air for the laptops and also Xserve.

My first Mac was at my first job after I persuaded my boss to replace my Windows PC which was failing constantly with BSOD. It was a Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) that came with a hockey pug mouse. The next Macs I had were the Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) which is still functioning well on my desktop. It is running OS X Leopard with just 512Mb RAM although the graphics card seemed to be cooked. Thankfully there is “Back to my Mac”: which helps to control the Mac. The other Mac I used was a PowerBook G3, codename Pismo. It was a rugged piece of hardware but getting replacement batteries for that now is tough. My current piece of Mac is the 15-inch MacBook Pro that was launched in early February 2008. (see the unpacking video I made)

So what was your first Mac and how many Macs had you so far?

At a time when Mac sales are still growing, there is a lot more for Apple to do to constantly innovate and push the boundaries of computer design, and at the same time, making it fun and affordable for consumers. What will the next 25 years be like? What kind of Macintosh will be talking about in years to come?
