Storyboy presents The Nurse with the Red Clown Nose (Giveaway included!)

Posted on 20 May, 2010 by Jimmy Liew

Place an iPhone in a child’s hands, and chances are that nine out of ten will figure out how it works almost immediately. Having suitable apps that will keep their attention will definitely come in useful for parents, sort of like an electronic-pacifier. To have that app educate and at the same time entertain the child will be a bonus!

The good folks at SkyVu Pictures have come up with the perfect solution: the Storyboy – a series of interactive storybook apps that combine interesting short stories with colorful animation and engaging narration. They have currently more than 20 book apps available in the App Stores that appeal to kids from ages 1 to 7. They also started on iPad development.

SkyVu Pictures was formed by brothers Hoa and Benjamin Vu back in 2007, and while they are based in Omaha, Nebraska, they also have studios in Singapore and Vietnam. All their stories were commissioned, with almost 90% of them written, illustrated and recorded in Singapore.

When I first got to know about Storyboy, I took the opportunity to let some of my colleagues who are mothers to it out with their children. One of the very first comments was that the parents did not have to show their children how to navigate and use the Storyboy apps  – the kids were happily reading and listening to those stories on their own, giving the adults precious free time!

For instance, one of my colleague’s child who is slightly more than a year old, thoroughly enjoyed the app Look & Listen On The Farm. It teaches animal names in both English and Chinese with beautiful illustrations and he could also learn the sound the animal makes by touching them on the screen.

Yesterday marked the launch of a new book called The Nurse with the Red Nose which teaches children about cancer and also includes the message about having hope and the joys of laughter. Besides raising awareness and educating children about cancer, the folks at SkyVu Pictures are also donating the sales revenue of this book to the Children’s Cancer Foundation based in Singapore. So from now till 30 April 2011, when you buy this storybook, not only will your child learn about childhood cancer and the positive messages of hope and resilience, you will also be contributing to a worthwhile charity. Watch a short video of the story below.
