iPhone 4 will come in July – or maybe not

Announced today during Steve Jobs’ keynote address at the WWDC, iPhone 4 will be available in Singapore sometime in July.
So come July, our wallets will cry.

We will keep you informed once the dates and pricing of local release as soon as we know them!
update Had a conversation with a Singtel representative managing corporate plans and he mentioned that the iPhone 4 might only be available in late August 2010. Put this information together with quotes from the three telcos in news report where they said they will bring the iPhone in the coming months, it might just be true we won’t get it in July.
Also, Apple might delay the iPhone 4 launch here just so that it won’t clash with the iPad launch, which also happens in July. Another reason might be it will take some time for IDA to do their testings on the phone before it is released.
But we will keep a close watch.

Question is, white or black? Hmm…
Pre-order for iPhone4 and iPad on 10 July in SG, with delivery in late July?
Kinda interesting both device “clash” together in July, if not for the consumers, then for the factories who have to work harder.
I had no idea you revived this blog. Haha.
I think that’s what I would do. Wait for iPhone 4. The black one for sure.
Glad Australia’s on the list.
Somehow I doubt the “late Aug” release timeframe:
A) I find it strange too, but I think Singtel will release first, following by Starhub & M1 “a few months” later. Why this is so, is because ST also owns Optus in AU; by talking to just ST, Apple has 1 less party to negotiate with, for release in SG and AU.
B) Unless Apple officially announce otherwise, I doubt Jobs will allow those below his pecking order to do “B” when he tells the whole world “A”. (IMHO, telcos, music labels and soon book publishers, listens to Jobs). Given the pre-order success in US, it “may” be possible for an official “we’ll be late by 1 month” announcement (think iPad) – we’ll see. After all, Apple did say this is fastest worldwide availability ramp-up in iPhone’s history => confidence in iPhone production.
C) Apple SG online store seems to be geared up to sell iPhone directly to the public. Does it mean we can get un-subsidized, no-contract iPhones? If so, Apple can act independently of the 3 telcos here, for release in July, as per their CEO.
C.1) SG ability to directly get un-subsidized, no-contract iPhones is in itself, IMHO, a big topic for discussion. Why do this (only) now? Is it because Apple is worried large groups of users already burdened with a 2-yr contract, won’t upgrade? What will happen to the large amount of resources the 3 telcos have already put in place in terms of support, warranty? (Remember, for all other mobile phone brands, the telco does ABSOLUTELY zero – they simply refer users to the Samsung, Nokia, Moto, etc service centers. But for Apple, ST/SH/M1 put in an entire change of support infra.)
C.2) Given Apple SG store pricing of 3GS 8GB @ S$748, and comparing against telco pricing, the telcos seem to be subsidizing at about S$550 per phone, which is above that of a normal phone over 2-years (at S$240-S$300). So, the question is, does it make financial sense to buy un-subsidized, given the S$300 telco penalty for upgrading after 12-months (highest likelihood given Apple’s yearly iPhone release)?

No pre-ordering offer from the red camp
Apple already announced that the iPad will be shipped to Singapore in July…way before this year WWDC..which Apple announced that the iPhone 4 will be shipped to SIngapore in July. So, I don’t think the date will be pushed back because of the iPad. And following pervious iPhones launch day in Singapore, I really doubt the IDA will need some time to do their testing. Furthermore, iPhone 3gs was introduced on 8th June 2009 and it was released in Singapore on July 11th. So I guess, the only reason why the launch day will be delayed is because of the availability of the phone.
