micro SIM is available now

The three local telcos will be providing micro SIM to their customers from Saturday (June 1 for SingTel) onwards as they prepare for the sale of iPad and the new iPhone in the coming weeks. Apple is the first company to utilise this much “smaller” sized card on consumer gadgets in the market.

Previously, enterprising Singaporeans who got their hands on the iPad 3G had to snip the standard SIM card to size before they can use it.

Availability

Starhub will offer the micro SIM cards to their customers who sign up to the MaxMobile Ultimate plan from 29 May 2010 which currently costs $36.38 per month (2 yr contract). According to this Straits Times report, M1 will also offer the micro SIM with their Mobile Broadband plans while SingTel will offer the card with support up to 21Mbps.

However, for existing customers, no details on whether any of the Telcos will offer the micro SIM as part of the multi SIM value added service, which makes more sense for customers who already have a mobile plan with data package.

We will definitely update this page once we know more.

iPad 3G + WiFi works with local telcos SIM, requires snipping

update – Another HWZ forummer has got it working with a SingTel Sim card. Just need someone using M1 to complete the holy trinity.

A HWZ forummer managed to snip his Starhub SIM card to size and fit it within his iPad 3G+WiFi – confirming that it is possible to have your cake and eat it…ie if you manage to find your cake aka iPad here.

Here is how I do it, the iPad comes with AT&T microsim, I use that to trace on the starhub sim card and then cut it out accordingly. btw I used a sissors to cut

No Setting needed after you insert the sim card, no need to change anything, it will work for Starhub not sure for other service providers

Word of caution – cut slowly and always check with the AT&T sim card and the iPad adapter

Go pop over to HWZ forum to see more of his handiwork and do make sure you have steady hands. Also if the SIM card you are snipping is your main one, you will need a SIM card holder that will let you use the snipped-card on your normal phones.

In case you have got yourself an iPad 3G+WiFi, you might also want to check out the various Telco’s Multi-SIM VAS that gives you the additional SIM card to share with your current line.
